Hedges that contain a good mix of trees and shrubs are a vital source of food and cover for our small mammals, birds and insects.  Add to it the wild flowers and grasses that grow along the base of the hedge and we have the basis for a wildlife haven.

The flowers of the blackthorn, hawthorn, roses and wild honeysuckle provide a source of nectar for bees, butterflies and other insects.  This in turn attracts small birds that feed on insects and who also enjoy the seeds, fruits and nuts available to them in late summer and autumn.

A good thick mature hedge provides shelter for small animals and birds protecting them from the elements and is a joy to behold.
